Successfull three days at the first FANTASY BASEL - The Swiss Comic Con after the COVID pandemic break

Media information: 10.10.2021

Three days full of encounters, togetherness, amazement, fun, games and happiness as well as art and fantasy in the most diverse forms. The sixth edition of FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con closed its doors on Sunday evening at Messe Basel. The organiser draws a successful balance.

The sixth edition of Switzerland’s biggest pop culture fair was held under special conjunctures: after the one-year break caused by the circumstances of the COVID pandemic, FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con had to be organised under new protective conditions. For both the organisers and the exhibitors, it was a gamble to stage this major event on 70,000 square metres of Messe Basel, which attracts a diverse audience from all over Switzerland and neighbouring countries. But the many fans from the cosplay, gaming, urban art, comic and tattoo communities did not let them down: large crowds flocked to the Basel exhibition halls over the past three days, which offered spectacular shows, exciting exhibitions, art, action, fun and games and a wide range of culinary specialities. The number of visitors this year is 45,000 and has positively surprised the organisers. “It is clear that this number is below the previous record of 54,000 visitors from 2019. Nevertheless, we can be very satisfied. We have proved that it is once again possible to attract an audience to a large event and that it is possible to have a safe exhibition where visitors feel comfortable,” says Martin Schorno, organiser of the Fantasy Basel. “Besides, our general aim is not to set new records, but to create an event that offers every visitor – tall or small, old or young – a happy experience and spreads a uniquely good mood.”

Amazement and admiration for many exclusive highlights

The aim of the makers of the Fantasy Basel – The Swiss Comic Con is to create a convention with a festival atmosphere for visitors that also offers plenty of space for culture and new inspiration. This year’s highlights included the Project X1 studio, authorised by Lukas Film, which brought never-before-seen fanmade film sets from the Star Wars universe to Basel throughout Europe. These were framed by countless Stormtroopers and other Star Wars characters, including the members of “The 501st Legion”.

The Artist Alley with over 200 artists and the Conteporary Urban Art Zone, where graffiti artists transformed empty walls into magnificent works of art at breathtaking speed, also attracted many spectators. Stars such as Anna Shaffer, Dean Cain and Torrance Coombs from films and series such as Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, The Witcher, Westworld, Superman and Superwoman travelled from overseas and presented themselves on various stages during exciting talks and autograph and photo sessions. The Swiss Space Museum’s exhibition “Space – today & tomorrow” covered everything from sci-fi to space travel, and in the Gaming Zone with over 100 PCs, gaming and eSport fans as well as casual gamers could test the latest computers and gadgets as well as the hottest games.

International Cosplay Stars

The line-up of the international cosplay community was particularly spectacular again this year. Cosplayers from all over the world posed in front of the fans’ cameras in artistically designed costumes that had taken months to make by hand, and took part in spectacularly staged cosplay contests on the big stage.

Successful Family Day

This year again, a large number of families found their way to Fantasy Basel. This was particularly evident on the Family Day on Friday, where people aged 10 – 16, provided they were accompanied by at least one adult, were offered a 50% discount on their admission ticket.

Shortage in COVID test centre was solved

On Saturday, the large number of visitors, which was difficult to estimate in advance, caused a temporary shortage in the COVID test centre at the Fantasy Basel, resulting in longer waiting times. However, the problem was quickly recognised and solved by the organisers, so that there were no more waiting times on Sunday.

Thanks to all helpers and supporters

The Fantasy Basel – The Swiss Comic Con would like to thank all the helpers and supporters of this unique event for their commitment. The peaceful atmosphere at the event was characterised by mutual respect, humour and fun. A spirit that cannot be valued highly enough in today’s world!

The organizers would like to do everything possible to enable the exhibitors, artists, and visitors to have this unique festival again as soon as possible. Many dealers, suppliers, and freelancers urgently need to be able to work again. The event should also be as safe as possible. FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con will not only be available to visitors from October 8-10, 2021, live in the halls of Messe Basel, but can also be watched via streams from all over the world thanks to virtual tickets.

Advance sales only start in mid-August; the organizers hope to know more about any requirements and restrictions on visitor numbers by then. «We will come up with something special for those who bought tickets in 2020 and have kept them until now. These remain valid. The support and loyalty of our visitors and exhibitors are terrific. This gives our team the strength to work on being able to go “live” again soon, even in these difficult times.

Successful final report of the FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con 2019

Overwhelming success, great enthusiasm among visitors, cosplayers, gamers, stars and exhibitors. The anniversary edition of the FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con was a splendid achievement. More than 54,000 visitors from Switzerland as well as from all over Europe and overseas have spent the last three days exploring the various universes of contemporary pop culture ranging from gaming to cosplay, from comics to fantasy films, from cooking to tattooing. A new record! Guests and exhibitors agree: The FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con is one of the most versatile, beautiful and high-quality conventions in Europe!

The fifth edition of FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con 2019 is now history. For the fifth time, the largest convention for pop culture in Switzerland was held in the halls of the Messe Basel. More than 54,000 visitors enjoyed a unique, extremely varied program on more than 60,000 square meters of action space. A new record! In workshops, discussion panels, autograph sessions with international cinema and TV stars, exciting gaming challenges and spectacular cosplay happenings, fantasy fans have immersed themselves in the dazzlingly colorful world of imagination, creativity and fantasy for three days, presenting themselves, meeting like-minded people, or simply got inspired by magnificent costumes, artful tattoos, imaginary universes, exciting lectures by prestigious scientists, and above all by the uniquely open and happy atmosphere.

However, organizers and visitors of the FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con 2019 had to digest a mishap: the announced exhibition around the TV series “Game of Thrones” and the related presentation of the “Iron Throne” could not be realized. Shortly before the beginning the convention became known that the delivery from England was blocked because of problems with customs clearance. Despite intensive efforts, it was unfortunately no longer possible to bring the exhibits to Basel. “Of course, we are very sorry about this misfortune,” says Martin Schorno. “However, we are very grateful that we also met with great understanding among our visitors.”

The number of visitors and the huge media interest was able to increase again compared to previous years. The reason for this success lies on the one hand in the ideal infrastructure of the Messe Basel and the professional work of the organizers of the mega-event, on the other hand, in the fact that at the FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con quality takes priority over quantity. “It’s not our primary concern to set new visitor records, but rather to offer visitors a varied program with innovations and high-quality content,” says Martin Schorno, founder and director of FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con. “That’s why we’re particularly pleased to receive a lot of positive feedback from visitors as well as exhibitors from home and abroad – both in terms of the composition and organization and in terms of the atmosphere of the convention. As of now, Basel occupies a prominent position on the world map of international comic cons. »

Next year, FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con will take place again. The organizers are happy to welcome all fans of contemporary pop culture to the Basel Exhibition Center from May 21 to 23, 2020.

Media information: 2. Mai 2019
